10+ ways to build a strong family foundation

10+ ways to build a strong family foundation

We sat down at the parent-teacher conference and expected to hear about our child’s progress since the last meeting. We are used to hearing that our child is helpful and kind, a good student, and a joy in class. What we didn’t expect to hear was how much the teacher loves hearing about all the family things we do. The teacher raved about our child explaining birthday traditions, visits from extended family, and chore systems.

What? That’s what it’s impressive about our family?

The teacher explained that many students these days don’t have such strong connections with their families. Everyone is so busy with their own schedules that time as a family unit gets ignored. And if they do get time together? It’s not really all that together. They exist in the same physical space but the connection aspect is missing.

Even a simple idea like choosing a birthday meal was foreign to some kids. These traditions that our family took for granted as normal life were creating bonds between us that will keep our relationships strong.

Now don’t think we have it all together. Heck, there are days I wonder if anyone likes anyone in this house! But then I step back and see one kid pat another on the back for doing a good job, or offer to help someone with a difficult task, and I realize that maybe we aren’t screwing everything up. My prayer is that the foundations we are laying down now with these intentional acts will continue to build on one another so our family can stick together in any storm that may come our way.

Conduct and Character

Conduct and Character

Have you ever been listening to a sermon and gotten knocked upside the head by the message? I hope so! Sometimes I listen to the sermon and while it's great, it doesn't penetrate deep. Other times? It's like God took a 6x6 post (it can't simply be a 2x4 for how hard I've been hit sometimes) and clobbered me so the message could sink in. But in a totally good way. Like it was exactly what has been on my heart but I couldn't put into words.

Update on July's Goals & My Goals for August

Update on July's Goals & My Goals for August

How has another month passed us by already? Is it really going to be August tomorrow? I might be freaking out a little at everything I need to get done this month. But before I get to that let's look at my goals from July and how I did with them.

1. A date with Micah

We actually got to do two dates this month! We had one at-home date where we ordered sushi and watched a movie and when we visited my parents we got to go out to dinner and out to a movie! We are simple people for dates but it makes it easy! It was wonderful getting that special time with him to be US and not be focused on the kids.

2. Mommy-kid dates with the three big kids

July somehow got away from us and with all the travel at the end I only got to take Parker and Mercedes on their dates. Jamison and I have one on the calendar for next weekend though so he won't be left behind. If you've never done a mommy/kid date I highly encourage you to try it! We started at age 3 and try to do something simple and fun that allows us to connect one-on-one with the kid for an hour or so.

3. Hand write three letters

Oh goodness. How sad that I didn't get this one done? I pulled out the paper but it never got finished. It will happen this week. I'll be sure to follow up with you on it!

4. Start journals with the big boys

We've started! And I meant to send the journals with them for the week they spent at Micah's parents house so they could write down all the fun stuff they were doing but I totally spaced and didn't transfer them from my bag to their bag on the trip. Oh well. At least we got started and we can keep these going now.

Well, not as great as other months but I still got some quality relationship time in. It's definitely an area I need to keep working in so I can build up stronger relationships with those I love.

Update on June's Goals & My Goals for July

Update on June's Goals & My Goals for July

It's that time again! The end of the month has arrived and it's my time to reflect back on the goals I set for myself. This month pushed me a bit out of my comfort zone. I had to psych myself up a couple times in order to complete some tasks but I think that was the point of this! If I never push myself to extend past what is comfy I'll stop growing and learning!

If you remember, I decided to change how I set my goals in June. Instead of choosing random areas I decided to follow the example set by Alexandra Kuykendall in Loving My Actual Life and focus on one area. In June I decide to focus on adventure so let's see how I did!
