The Beginner's Guide to Batch Cooking

Over ten years ago when I first started getting hands-on in the kitchen (meaning trying to make things from scratch) I had no idea what batch cooking was. Blogging was only beginning to be a thing so there weren’t thousands of people telling you all about it. In fact, I only followed a few blogs at that point and I don’t remember them ever using the term!

I was simply doing what made sense in my head - “I’m already getting the dishes dirty, I have the ingredients on hand, I may as well make a double (triple, quadruple, etc) batch and stick the rest in the freezer for another meal. It will save me a mess and time later! Wow, I’m so smart.”

Yes, ten-years-ago-Katie thought she was something special. I mean, I am pretty awesome, but it’s so much more than batch cooking that makes me cool ;) Anyway…

Weekly Menu Plan #59

Spring has officially shown up! Our grill is out and we are eating fun meals. The kids are outside nearly every day on their bikes and coloring with chalk. I've got a few super fast meals on the menu this week as well as a couple that I can prep ahead and cook when it's time. It might even get warm enough this week for picnics... as long as the wind isn't terribly crazy. Yay for spring!

Plans changed a little from last week's menu. We are getting together with friends tonight for dinner so Shepherd's Pie gets pushed to Sunday. No big deal! For the friend dinner I'm making our favorite Spicy Shredded Pork and we split up all the fixings between our families to create a big taco bar. I'm really excited!

Burrito bowls are one of the most versatile options - your choice of proteins, veggies, and toppings! Chili can be customized based on how chunky (and what makes up the chunks) you choose to make it as well as the spice level. It can also include meat or be vegetarian. I love having choices when it comes to my food!
