Focus on joy when life is changing

Focus on joy when life is changing

I'm a firm believer that joy is a choice. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit that we have access to when we remain in Christ but if we choose a sour attitude then we can miss out on that joy! Change can be a big instigator to a grumpy attitude because we want things to stay the same! When life brings change we can either cling to the past or we can focus on joy and look to the future.

Three Word Wednesday: Watch the Trunk

I'm linking this up over at 152 Insights to My Soul.

From Kristin: #ThreeWordWednesday is simple, really. I know we're all busy with life and kids and jobs and parents and friends and church and whatever else it is that occupies our time. Some weeks I'm not sure what my post will be about, but knowing people will show up here on Wednesdays is good motivation to write something. #ThreeWordWednesday is a chance to pause and hear God. Sum up what you're hearing in three words. Those three words are enough. But stories are good too.

Watch the Trunk

Over the weekend Micah and I watched The Revenant. If you haven't seen it the basic idea is that a fur trader back in the 1820's is attacked by a bear and then left for dead by members of his crew. He overcomes incredible odds to survive. It's a really well done movie but if you aren't a fan of violence you may want to skip it or have a blanket to hide behind. It's not crazy gory like some movies but there are some aggressive fights and other bloody moments.

Anyway, there was a quote that is repeated several times during the movie that really struck me.

As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe. Keep breathing. When there is a storm and you stand in front of a tree, if you look at its branches, you swear it will fall. But if you watch the trunk, you will see its stability.
— Hugh Glass' Wife - The Revenant

I immediately felt God in that quote. We go through so many storms in life but if our hope is in Him, if we are rooted in him, we should be able to stand strong through everything this life throws at us.

Life will never be without trouble. There will come times when problems are swirling around us and those on the outside will be sure that we can't make it through. Job loss, death, bankruptcy, illness, infertility, infidelity, miscarriage, betrayal, the list goes on. Even more "minor" problems in the day to day can pile on and make us feel overwhelmed and unable to survive to the next day. But we have something the world doesn't - we have Jesus.

By choosing to be rooted in Him our faith grows strong and we can weather any storm. Our lives and our faith can remain solid and be a testimony. I want people to see me facing the storm and standing strong. Remaining stable in Him. I want them to question how I'm able to stay upright and not crumble. And I want them to choose the same.

What do you think of the movie quote? Have you seen The Revenant?

Joy in Chaos

The idea for this blog came from a comment a friend made one day. I had hosted a meeting at my house and as we were closing up and saying our good-byes one friend said, "Thank you for being real."

She was frustrated by feeling that all her friends and collegues had their lives totally together and everything was picture perfect. My home is NEVER close to that and seeing a house where clutter has a normal presence and fingerprints are a typical decoration put her at ease.

While I have many crazy dreams of a perfectly organized home, amazing craft projects, and incredibly creative and well balanced meals, I also have a realistic view of myself, my strengths, and my weaknesses. I don't need everything to have a place in order to function. Would it be nice? Sure. I do, however, need creative outlets in various forms to feel happy.

So from that simple comment sprang this idea. A place for me to showcase how I do real life and how I find joy in this real life. It's a bit outside my comfort zone to put my life on display (but not TOO much outside) but I know how much I appreciate those I relate to in real life and online.

Sometimes we need to know that someone else understands what it's like to

  • wash the same load of laundry over and over because you keep forgetting to move it to the dryer (even with a timer!)
  • declare a movie & popcorn day with the kids in the hopes of getting just a few moments of quiet time
  • promise yourself you will motivate and push "play" on the exercise video... tomorrow

I'm finding joy in who I am and this crazy life I have. Will you join me?

I've got a passion for encouraging women to really love the life they have - crazy schedules, messy floors, toddler tantrums, and sloppy kisses. I want to inspire you to choose joy during the highs and during the lows. I want you to love the chaos but also find a way to manage it so you don't lose your beautiful mind in the process.
