Every week I like to take a moment to showcase the moments that brought me the most joy. Sometimes they are awesome activities and other times it's a sweet moment between the kids. There are always moments that can fill us with joy if we choose to see them with a thankful heart.
Oh man, it is so wonderful to have sunshine and warm temps again! Despite a few blips on the health radar with a fever for one kid and a stomach issue for another we had a fantastic week. It feels so good to be out in the sunshine again and letting the kids burn off oodles of energy without the the 20 minutes of putting on coats and boots beforehand. I love spring!
I had to do my best to pick out my favorite moments and not go crazy posting too many this week.
1. Sleeping in Daddy's arms
Last Sunday Anders had a slight fever so we decided to keep him out of Sunday School and let him sit with us in church. He ate an apple, drank some water, then fell asleep in Micah's arms and slept through a good portion of the service. When he woke up he ate some more apple then was ready to go home for lunch. His fever continued for another day or so and then left as suddenly as it appeared. But it was so sweet to see him sleeping all cuddled up on Micah's chest.
2. Kids in the kitchen
One of the weekly chores in our house is to help in the kitchen with food prep plus setting and clearing the table. I'm not always the most generous when it comes to the food prep side, despite knowing how important it is for them to learn, because I really love cooking. But I realize that at 9.5 and 8 the big boys should have a much better grasp on simple cooking techniques than they do so I'm working on getting them more involved. Last week I had Parker reading the recipe and figuring out how to double it for our family. He's learned fractions in school so he was pretty good at this!
The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle (no longer available) included a course called Cooking Camp for Kids by Rebecca Sayler from A Better Way to Homeschool. I think I'm going to attempt to use this during the summer with the three big kids. It looks like something they could definitely benefit from and all the planning work is done for me!
3. Homemade Cheddar Bay Waffles topped with Chili
Speaking of cooking! I adapted a recipe for Cheddar Bay Biscuits and made my own version of Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Waffles! I'll be posting the recipe in a couple days so be sure to come back for that. These were amazing and were even better once topped with chili. I could see this becoming a new regular meal because everyone agreed they were far better than cornbread waffles.
We've been in the 50s and 60s for the last week or so and it's incredible. All the snow is gone from the deck so I can open the patio door and let the kids run around - no shoes or jackets needed! I can't get enough of this beautiful weather!
5. Weekly Date Night
We've started having a weekly date night on Saturdays because of working through 15 Minute Marriage Makeover. Last week it was Micah's job to plan but this weekend the job fell to me. I chose to make a delicious homemade skillet blondie in an 8" cast iron skillet topped with cookie dough ice cream, hot fudge, and butterscotch for us to enjoy while we watched Thor Ragnarok with the director's commentary. Once we finished our cookie we built the Garma Mecha Man LEGO set that has been sitting in our closet for around a year. Because we focused on intimacy last week and spending time together that is enjoyable, not just mundane, this seemed like the perfect culmination of that.
