There was a definite theme this week of humility in our verse choices - three of the verses featured it! So did I choose to focus on being humble or the fourth verse that stood alone?
I will be sure you get the honor due you at just the right time. 1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV)
I have this thing about being a show off. I'm loud (and often obnioxous, I'm guessing) and love for people to know I'm around. I like the attention that comes with people knowing I've done something. I'm pretty sure it's why God did not gift me with any sort of musical talent - it'd be too hard for me to surrender the spotlight, even in a worship band.
Fame and glory should not be what we seek out. Everyone knowing our name should not be our goal. Our instructions are to love God, love others, and submit to His will. There is a possibility that His will could mean fame or people knowing our name, it's happened to plenty of people! But seeking those things for the wrong reasons will leave us empty and only craving more.
Think of reality shows and the types of people they feature. It's usually a star that is no longer in the spotlight (but desperately still wants to be) or people seeking a name for themselves. These people seem eager to do anything that will keep their name in the headlines, often at a very high moral price.
Stay in God's will. Stay under his hand and protection. Humble yourself, recognize that you are not in control and that you can't do this whole life thing on your own. Admit that you need strength that has to come from Him, not yourself. And it's not a one time deal. It's a daily, sometimes hourly admission.
Humble yourself when the kids are fighting and the dishes are stacked up and dinner still needs to be made. Admit you need strength to make it through.
Humble yourself when the boss passes you over for a promotion you felt you deserved. Admit you need wisdom and guidance.
Humble yourself when the bank calls asking about an overdraft. Admit you need help with your finances.
Humble yourself when you've done a good job and people are praising you. Admit that God is in control and that He deserves the glory, not you.
Heavenly Father, we can't do this without you. We like to think that we can control our lives and that we can handle everything that comes our way but we can't. You are in control and have the full picture in view. I pray that we would be able to humble ourselves daily before you and submit to your will. Help us to cast our anxieties and fears on you and also to give you our hopes and dreams. Your yolk is easy and your burden is light, if we only choose to take it rather than struggle with doing it all ourselves. Thank you for loving us so deeply and completely. In your son's mighty name, Amen.
What verse did you choose this week?
Do you ever struggle with humility? Are you good about submitting to God each day and asking for His help or do you try and do it on your own until you realize you can't?
