Promises for the Hungry Heart - Week 4 (Update)
Welcome back! If you are just joining us, we are using the YouVersion Bible App to follow a devotional together. Read THIS POST to get all the information you need to join in and then you can read THIS MORNING'S POST to see the promises we are focusing on this week.
DId you get a chance to spend some time with this week's promises. Although I read each promise today the one I chose jumped out immediately. It's one I've hung on to for years and years and. Each one is so fantastic but the promise I am claiming this week is....
Give me your burdens and you'll receive My rest. Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
I have several friends and family members in battles with their health right now. They are given these diagnoses and are expected to make such huge decisions in a short amount of time. I can't fathom the stress that needing to rush through some of these choices adds to the already incredibly frightening situation.
One of these friends is a dear, sweet, amazing woman named Allison. I met her through an online forum when we were both pregnant back in 2008. She is an incredible woman of God and I stand in awe of her faith constantly. When the verses for this week came up I thought of Allison and her diagnosis of colon cancer earlier this spring less than a week after losing her mother in law to cancer. She's also a wife and mom to four awesome kids. Talk about a heavy burden.
Allison stood in faith through the whole journey and believed she would be healed. She could have held on to fear and gotten weighed down by everything happening but instead she handed it all over to God and trusted in His plan. Through strands the He wove together ages ago she was connected to a fantastic surgeon by another friend in our same group. Her local friends came together to provide meals and childcare. And just a few weeks after her diagnosis she was declared cancer free.
Handing our burdens and and troubles to God can seem hard. We want to hold on to them because we think by keeping them we are controlling things. We are never in control. We are only causing ourselves more harm by not letting Jesus take the weight off.
Is there something weighing you down? Do you feel weary and burdened? What can you do? The answer is in the verse in three parts.
Come to Him.
Right there in that first verse. Approach Jesus. Call out to him. Tell him your trouble.
Take His Yoke.
He offers His gift freely. He paid the price for your troubles already so there is nothing you can do in exchange.
Learn from Him
Study His word. Find a devotional or study guide that speaks on what you are going through.
@@His yoke is easy and His burden is light. It fits and was chosen for you.@@
Heavenly Father, I thank you so much that you don't want us to be weighed down with troubles and worries. That you love us enough that you took all of that with you on the cross. Help us to release our burdens to you instead of holding on to them. Help us to trust in you and your promises. Amen.
What promise stood out for you this week? Is there one you are claiming for your life?
